Holiday and Secrets Tour of the National Cathedral with a Special Concert Featuring Handel's Messiah
12/10/2006
Come enjoy two very different rare Cathedral experiences before the holidays at the famous National Cathedral.
The Washington National Cathedral is one of Washington’s most magnificent and stunning structures. Although the foundation stone was laid in 1907, it was not until September 29, 1990, exactly 83 years after ground was broken, that the final stone was set in place.
The first part will include a detailed look at the building's exterior. This walk tells the story of the Century Greek-born sculptor and artist, Constantine Seferlis, who devoted nearly 20 years to carving the stone that brought the National Cathedral to life. Led by Seferlis’ son, Clift, a stone carver in his own right, you will walk the beautiful grounds and hear the cathedral’s history as only someone who knows the building intimately can tell it.
At the conclusion of the tour all are invited inside for an amazing concert. Enjoy the masterpiece of Handel's Messiah! This festive holiday concert by the Cathedral Choral Society includes favorite carols, music for organ and brass, and the world premiere of a carol by Sir John Tavener. Dirksen. The Holiday classic is conducted by Cathedral Music Director Michael McCarthy and features the Washington National Cathedral Choir and Baroque Orchestra. Internationally renowned soloists include Elizabeth Weigle, soprano; Yvette Smith, alto; Rufus Müller, tenor and William Sharp, bass.
